Being a parent carries a lot of responsibility, and the process of supporting children while building skills that lead to growth and independence can feel overwhelming. Whether you are trying to manage challenging behaviors, reinforce rules or boundaries, or simply navigate the external pressures placed by others, we are here to support and empower YOU!
Our providers' primary goal for families is to ensure parents and key stakeholders in a child's life understand the underpinnings of their child's behavior and feel equipped to not only manage challenging behaviors, but to also help children build neurocognitive skills such as planning, problem-solving, distress tolerance, and effective communication through your daily interactions as a parent. As we assist our parents, we are able to strengthen familial bonds and improve the connection you have with your child.
Parent training in Collaborative Problem-Solving (CPS) allows us to work with parents to identify neurocognitive skill deficits that explain many challenging behaviors a child exhibits across different settings and situations. By shifting how we view certain behaviors as directly linked to a skill-deficit rather than a will-deficit, parent-child interactions become less about tolerating and diminishing challenging behavior and more about teaching and molding children to grow and develop.
CPS is evidence-based and teaches parents to partner with children to identify triggers for behaviors and work together as a team to plan strategies for handling problems before they happen. More information about CPS can be found at thinkkids.org
